Module 6 of the USA Dropshipping Master System. Research depth follows signal: before a $400 test you need a 10-minute filter and a 2-page brief — not a thesis.
Table of Content
Stage 1: The 10-minute kill filter
| Check | Kill condition |
|---|---|
| 1. Retail reflex (Google Shopping + Amazon) | Identical branded item at ≤60% of your target price with Prime — unless you can name a genuinely different angle/bundle |
| 2. Saturation (Ad Library count) | 20+ active advertisers AND you cannot name an unworked angle |
| 3. Trend slope (Google Trends, 12mo + 5yr) | Spiked and collapsing — you would be buying someone else’s exit |
| 4. Policy sniff | The one sentence your winning ad must say violates Meta/TikTok policy |
| 5. IP sniff | It is a clone of a patented/branded product |
| 6. Avoid-list | Baby safety, ingestibles, high-defect electronics, fragile, fit-dependent (Module 3) |
Expect 8 of 10 candidates to die here. That is the system working — every fast kill is ad money saved.
Stage 2: Unit economics — the math that decides everything
Worked example at a $39.95 price with US-warehouse fulfillment:
| Line | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Selling price | $39.95 | Anchored against $80+ retail alternative |
| Landed cost (unit + US shipping, duty-inclusive) | −$11.00 | US-warehouse quote; NEVER a duty-free China-postal price |
| Payment fees (~3.5%) | −$1.40 | Stripe/Shopify Payments blended |
| Refund allowance (4%) | −$1.60 | Assume refund WITHOUT return — US customers will not ship returns overseas |
| CONTRIBUTION MARGIN | $25.95 | = the maximum you can pay to acquire a customer (breakeven CPA) |
| Breakeven ROAS | 1.54 | $39.95 ÷ $25.95 — under the 1.6 ceiling: PASS |
“I can pay up to $25.95 to acquire a customer; realistic US cold-traffic CPA for this category is $20–45; therefore my headroom is thin and I need the bundle to lift AOV before I scale.” If you cannot produce this sentence for a product, you are not ready to spend on it.
Stage 3: The verdict — one of exactly three words
- GO — gates passed, score ≥7.5, economics verified. Attach: test budget, 3 launch angles, kill/scale rules.
- GO-WITH-ANGLE — demand proven but crowded; viable ONLY through the named angle/audience. The angle is a condition, not a suggestion.
- NO-GO — state the single biggest killer and what evidence would flip the verdict. Move on without regret.
The pre-mortem (anti-bias insurance)
Before any GO, write 3–4 sentences: “It is six weeks later and this product lost money. What happened?” If the failure story is more convincing than the success story, downgrade the verdict. This habit prevents the researcher’s disease: falling in love with a candidate.
Confidence grades: mark every verdict A (all key numbers verified today), B (mostly verified), or C (thin data — do the $0 organic validation first). A GO built on thin data is a guess wearing a suit.
Passes retail check (incumbents at $22–35, 3.9★ averages, office-angle only — angle room exists). Trend flat-positive. Claims runnable on comfort/support language — never “fixes back pain” (policy violation AND a lie). Economics at $34.95 with $9.00 landed: margin $23.24, breakeven ROAS 1.50 — pass. Pre-mortem: “CPA landed at $32 against a $23 margin — single-unit AOV too thin.” Convincing — so the bundle is a CONDITION. VERDICT: GO-WITH-ANGLE (gamers/new-mums, bundle mandatory), confidence B.
Same week, a “self-stirring mug” — 11M TikTok views. The filter killed it in nine minutes: Amazon sells branded versions at $14 with Prime (fail), Trends shows a collapsing spike (fail), batteries + liquid (fail). $0 spent. THIS is the median experience — most candidates die on paper, and every fast kill is $400 of tuition you did not pay.
