Pakistan Ecommerce & Meta Ads Glossary: 51 Terms Every Pakistani Founder & Marketer Must Know (2026)
UPDATED JUNE 2026Written for Pakistani ecommerce founders, freelance marketers, and SMM students · All examples in PKR with Pakistan-specific benchmarks.
TL;DR — Read this first
If you run Meta ads or an ecommerce brand in Pakistan — also called DTC (Direct-to-Consumer) in the industry — these 51 terms are the vocabulary you’ll hear every day from clients, founders, and inside Ads Manager. Each one comes with a plain-English definition, a Pakistani-rupee example, a pro tip, and the formula at the bottom. The 10 you must master in week one: ROAS, CAC, LTV, AOV, CTR, CPM, COGS, Gross Margin, Contribution Margin, Break-even ROAS.
CATEGORY 01
Meta Ads Performance Metrics
The numbers you see inside Ads Manager. These tell you whether your ad is working.
CTR
Click-Through Rate (Link Click-Through Rate)
Of the people who saw your ad, what percentage actually clicked it. CTR measures how attractive your ad is — a strong creative pulls more clicks per impression.
CPM
Cost Per Mille (cost per 1,000 impressions)
What you pay Meta for every 1,000 times your ad is shown. CPM is the “rent” of appearing in people’s feeds. Lower CPM = cheaper reach.
CPC
Cost Per Click
What you pay for each click on your ad. Lower CPC is better — but only if the clicker also buys. Cheap clicks from the wrong audience waste budget.
CPA / CPO
Cost Per Acquisition / Cost Per Order
The most important Ads Manager number after ROAS. What it costs in ad spend to get one purchase. Compare against your Maximum Allowed CPA (AOV × gross margin minus fulfilment costs).
CPL
Cost Per Lead
How much you pay to get one lead — a WhatsApp conversation started, a form filled, or an email signup. Critical for Click-to-WhatsApp campaigns in Pakistan.
ROAS
Return On Ad Spend
How many rupees of revenue you got for every rupee of ad spend. The single most-quoted ecommerce metric — and the most-misunderstood. ROAS does NOT equal profit.
Frequency
Average ad views per person
Average number of times the same person sees your ad in a given window (usually 7 days). High frequency = creative fatigue — CTR drops, CPA rises.
Hook Rate
3-second video view rate
Of the people scrolling past your video, what percentage stopped to watch the first 3 seconds. Diagnoses whether your opening frame stops the scroll.
Hold Rate
Thru-play / video completion rate
Of the people who started your video (3-sec view), what percentage watched to a meaningful endpoint — usually 15 seconds or completion. Diagnoses storytelling and pacing.
CATEGORY 02
Campaign & Audience Strategy
How you structure campaigns and choose who Meta shows your ads to.
Learning Phase
Meta’s 7-day algorithmic learning window
The first 7 days (or 50 conversion events, whichever comes first) when Meta is testing who responds best to your ad. During this window, the algorithm is exploring — performance is unstable.
Optimization Event
The action you tell Meta to maximise
The user action Meta should optimise toward — Purchase, AddToCart, Lead, etc. Meta uses this to find people most likely to do that action.
TOF / MOF / BOF
Top / Middle / Bottom of Funnel
The three audience layers in a full-funnel ecommerce strategy. TOF = brand-new strangers (cold). MOF = people who watched a video or visited the site (warm). BOF = people who added to cart or reached checkout (hot).
Targeting
The audience definition for an ad set
The full set of rules that defines WHO Meta should show your ad to — age, gender, location, interests, behaviours, custom audiences, and exclusions. Three main targeting types: Broad, Interest-based, and Custom/Lookalike.
Broad Targeting
Empty detailed targeting + Advantage+ ON
Leave detailed interests empty. Let Meta’s AI find buyers using only age + location + the pixel signal. Often outperforms manual interest stacks in 2026.
Custom Audience
An audience built from YOUR data
A list of people you define based on past actions with your brand — website visitors, video viewers, page engagers, customer email list, ATC abandoners.
Lookalike Audience (LAL)
Meta-generated similar audience
Meta finds NEW people who behave similarly to your existing best customers. Powerful for scaling cold acquisition.
Retargeting
Re-showing ads to engaged prospects
Showing ads to people who already touched your brand — visited the site, watched a video, added to cart. The highest-ROAS layer of your account because the audience is pre-qualified.
CATEGORY 03
Tracking & Attribution
The plumbing that connects your website to Meta. Without good tracking, the algorithm is blind.
Meta Pixel
Browser-side tracking code
A small piece of JavaScript on your website that reports user actions (page view, add to cart, purchase) back to Meta. The foundation of all Meta ad optimisation. DigiPro installs and verifies Pixel + CAPI for Pakistani Shopify brands.
CAPI
Conversions API (server-side tracking)
Server-side tracking that sends events from your server directly to Meta (Meta Business documentation ↗). Critical in 2026 because Apple’s iOS 14.5+ blocks 30–40% of regular pixel events. CAPI bypasses the blocking.
Standard Events
Meta’s predefined event names
Meta’s pre-built event vocabulary: PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, AddPaymentInfo, Purchase, Lead, Search. Meta’s algorithm understands these natively.
iOS 14.5+ Impact (and Solution)
Apple’s ATT prompt limits tracking
Apple’s App Tracking Transparency ↗ prompt asks iOS users if they want apps to track them. In Pakistan, ~35% of iPhone Instagram users opt out — meaning Meta loses tracking signal on those users.
UTM Parameters
Trackable URL tags for attribution
Tracking tags you append to your URLs (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign) so Google Analytics can attribute traffic to the correct source and campaign.
GA4
Google Analytics 4
Google’s website analytics platform (the replacement for Universal Analytics). Tracks Sessions, Users, Conversions, Funnel drop-offs, and acquisition sources.
GTM
Google Tag Manager
A container tool that lets you install Pixel, CAPI, GA4 and other tracking codes on your website WITHOUT touching the website code every time. Faster, safer, more flexible.
CATEGORY 04
Website & Funnel Metrics
What happens after the click. Most Pakistani brands lose 95%+ of clickers here — fix the funnel before scaling ad spend.
Sessions
A single visit to your store
A session is one visit to your website, including any pages viewed within a 30-minute window. The same user visiting twice in a day counts as 2 sessions.
Bounce Rate
% who leave without engaging
Percentage of visitors who landed on a page and left without clicking, scrolling, or interacting. High bounce rate signals the page is slow, off-topic, or broken.
Landing Page Views
Clicks that actually loaded the page
The number of people who clicked your ad AND waited for the destination page to fully load. Always lower than Link Clicks, because slow pages lose people before they arrive.
Add to Cart (ATC)
Sessions that added a product to cart
When a visitor clicks “Add to Cart” on a product page. Tracked as an event in your Pixel and CAPI. The first real signal of buying intent.
Initiate Checkout
Sessions that opened checkout
When a visitor moves from cart to checkout — typically entering name, phone, and address. The strongest pre-purchase intent signal.
Purchase
A completed transaction (order placed)
The final pixel event — an order has been placed on your store. This is what Meta’s algorithm optimises toward when you set Sales as your objective.
Cart Abandonment
% of carts that never became a purchase
The percentage of people who added something to cart but never completed the purchase. Industry average is around 70–80% — every brand has a leaky cart.
AOV
Average Order Value
The average rupee amount per order. Pushing AOV up makes your CAC easier to recover — every extra rupee per order is pure leverage.
PageSpeed Score
Google’s mobile page-speed grade
Google’s 0–100 grade of how fast your page loads on mobile. Above 70 is good. Below 50 is hurting your conversion rate AND your search rankings.

CATEGORY 05
Business & Financial Terms
The vocabulary every founder uses. Knowing these turns you from a “media buyer” into a real growth partner.
Revenue / Sales
Total money received — the top line
All the money the business received from selling products in a given period, BEFORE deducting any costs. Revenue and Sales are used interchangeably for ecommerce.
Gross Profit
Revenue minus COGS
What’s left after subtracting only the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) from Revenue. Does NOT include ads, salaries, rent, or taxes — just the raw cost of making the product.
Gross Profit Margin %
Gross profit as a % of revenue
Tells you how product-efficient the business is. Higher margin = more room for marketing, salaries, profit. The single biggest lever on a ecommerce P&L.
Net Profit
The actual money in the bank
What’s truly left after EVERY cost — COGS, ads, salaries, rent, taxes, COD returns, payment fees. This is the bottom line — the real profit of the business.
Net Profit Margin %
Net profit as a % of revenue
The single best measure of whether a business is genuinely healthy. Every founder should know their net margin to the nearest percentage point.
Break-even Point
Sales level where you stop losing money
The level of sales at which your TOTAL revenue exactly covers TOTAL costs. Below it = losing money. Above it = profit. Every business should know its monthly break-even number.
ROI
Return on Investment
How much you got back for what you put in — used for ANY investment, not just ads. Hires, equipment, photoshoots, software — everything can be ROI-graded.
CATEGORY 06
Pakistan Tax & Compliance
Pakistan-specific tax rules. Getting these wrong silently adds 5–16% cost to every order.
NTN
National Tax Number
Your unique tax ID, issued by FBR. Free to get on the FBR Iris portal ↗. Required to file income tax returns, register for sales tax (STRN), and open a business bank account in Pakistan.
WHT
Withholding Tax
Tax that is DEDUCTED at the source before you receive your money. Your courier withholds it from COD collections, your bank withholds it from international payments, an employer withholds it from salaries.
COD 4% Tax
Courier-deducted tax on every COD order
A Pakistan rule effective July 2025 onwards (VAT Calc reference ↗): every COD order has 2% Withholding Tax + 2% Sales Tax = 4% TOTAL deducted by the courier before remitting to the seller. The rate DOUBLES to 8% for non-filer sellers.
CATEGORY 07
Logistics, COD & Fulfilment
How orders move from warehouse to customer’s hand. The make-or-break operations layer for Pakistani ecommerce.
COD
Cash on Delivery
Customer pays the courier in cash when the package arrives at their door. 70%+ of Pakistani ecommerce orders are COD — it’s non-negotiable in this market.
RTO
Return to Origin
When a COD order is NOT accepted by the customer and the package returns to the warehouse. You lose outbound shipping, return shipping, packaging, and opportunity cost on every RTO.
Dispatch · Shipped · OFD · Delivered · Returned
The five stages of a Pakistani order
The order lifecycle. Dispatch = leaves your warehouse. Shipped = courier picked it up. OFD = Out For Delivery (today). Delivered = with the customer. Returned = back at your warehouse.
SKU
Stock Keeping Unit
A unique code for each product variant. “Serum 30ml” and “Serum 50ml” are TWO different SKUs. Used for inventory tracking, sales reporting, and warehouse picking.
Inventory · Stock Out · Restock
The 3 states of every SKU
Inventory = goods on hand. Stock Out = sold out (lost sales, broken campaigns). Restock = ordering more from your supplier or factory.
Packaging Cost
Cost per order of outer packaging
The cost per shipped order of the outer box or mailer, filler, thank-you card, sample insert, and label. Typical Pakistan range: PKR 40–150 per order.
CATEGORY 08
Tools & Payments
The two tools every Pakistani ecommerce brand should set up correctly from day one.
WhatsApp Business API
Automated WhatsApp for high-volume brands
Meta’s paid version of WhatsApp designed for businesses doing more than ~50 conversations per day. Required for automation, multi-agent support, broadcast lists, and the WhatsApp Business Catalog feature.
NayaPay / Sadapay
Virtual VISA cards built for Pakistan
Two Pakistani digital wallets (NayaPay ↗ · Sadapay ↗) that issue virtual VISA cards for international payments. The cheapest legal route for Pakistani brands to pay Meta and Google ads — total taxes ~5.5%, versus ~22% via a traditional bank credit card (e.g., Standard Chartered).

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good ROAS for a Pakistani ecommerce brand?
For mid-tier Pakistani ecommerce (PKR 1,500–4,000 AOV), a healthy Blended ROAS is 3.5–5×. Break-even ROAS in Pakistan is structurally higher than global benchmarks (3–4× minimum) because of the 4% courier COD tax, 5–22% tax on Meta ad payments, and 15–25% COD return rates that erode profitability.
How do I calculate CPM in PKR?
CPM = (Total ad spend ÷ Total impressions) × 1,000. For example, if you spent PKR 2,000 and got 10,000 impressions, your CPM is PKR 200. In Pakistan, healthy Reels CPM is under PKR 180; Feed CPM is under PKR 300.
What is the COD 4% tax in Pakistan?
From July 2025 onwards, every COD order in Pakistan has 2% Withholding Tax + 2% Sales Tax deducted by the courier before remitting payment to the seller — totalling 4%. For non-filer sellers (not on the ATL), this doubles to 8%. Filer status alone halves this tax.
Should I pay Meta ads via my regular bank card or NayaPay?
Always use NayaPay or Sadapay. Total taxes on Meta payments via NayaPay are around 5.5%, compared to approximately 21.8% via a Standard Chartered credit card (which includes 5% advance income tax + 16% PRA Sales Tax Withholding on advertising services). Switching to NayaPay saves PKR 16,000 per PKR 1 lakh of ad spend.
What is a healthy COD return (RTO) rate in Pakistan?
Under 15% is healthy. 15–25% is acceptable. 25–35% is bleeding margin. Above 35% is an emergency. The single best lever to reduce RTO is a WhatsApp confirmation flow that messages the customer at every stage from order placed to delivery.
What is CAPI and do I need it in 2026?
Conversions API (CAPI) is server-side tracking that sends events from your server directly to Meta. You need it. Apple’s iOS 14.5+ ATT prompt blocks 30–40% of regular pixel events — meaning Meta loses tracking signal on roughly a third of your Pakistani iPhone Instagram traffic without CAPI. Install it via Shopify’s native Meta channel in 10 minutes.
What is the difference between CPA and CAC?
CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) is Meta-only: ad spend on Meta divided by purchases from Meta. CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) is total: ALL marketing spend (Meta + TikTok + Google + influencers + email tools) divided by NEW customers across all channels. CAC is the honest founder-level number.
What is a Lookalike Audience and how big should it be?
A Lookalike Audience (LAL) is a Meta-generated audience of NEW people who behave similarly to your existing best customers. Start with a 1% LAL of Pakistan (~2 million people) seeded from a customer list of 500+ past purchasers. Move to 2% or 3% LAL only when you’re scaling beyond PKR 100,000/day in ad spend.
